How do State Bank interest rate decisions affect PSX shares?

Last reviewed:

Short answer

When the State Bank of Pakistan cuts its policy rate, bank deposits, T-bills and money-market funds pay less, so money tends to move into shares and companies' borrowing costs fall — PSX usually rises. Rate hikes do the opposite. In September 2026 the SBP held the policy rate at 11.5% for a third straight meeting, citing inflation pressure from the Middle East conflict; its next decision was scheduled for 26 October 2026.

Why rates matter so much in Pakistan

  • Competition for savings: when T-bills pay 20%, few savers buy shares; at lower rates, equities look more attractive.
  • Valuations: a lower discount rate raises the present value of future earnings.
  • Corporate profits: heavily indebted companies save on interest when rates fall.
  • Leverage: margin financing becomes cheaper, adding to buying.

Where things stood in 2026

The SBP raised the policy rate by 100 basis points to 11.5% in April 2026 amid Middle East tensions, then held it there in June and on 14 September 2026, with seven of ten committee members voting to hold. Inflation was 10.26% in September, above the SBP's 5–7% medium-term target. The interest-rate corridor ran from 10.5% to 12.5%. Earlier, the KSE-100 had gained about 44% in FY26, its third straight year of outperforming other asset classes.

Reading a monetary policy statement

  1. The decision: cut, hold or hike, and by how much versus expectations.
  2. The vote split: a divided committee hints at the next move.
  3. Inflation outlook: the projected path versus the target range.
  4. External account: reserves, the current account and the IMF programme.
  5. Forward guidance: words like "cautious" or "real interest rates positive" signal the stance.

Practical lessons for investors

  • Markets move on surprises; an expected cut may already be in prices.
  • Do not trade the announcement with leverage — spreads and gaps can be large.
  • Match the instrument to the cycle: money-market funds shine when rates are high, equities often lead early in cutting cycles.
  • Islamic investors: many Islamic funds and Islamic banks' profit rates also track the policy rate, though the contracts differ.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current SBP policy rate?

It was 11.5% after the 14 September 2026 decision. Check the State Bank's website for the latest, as the committee meets roughly every six weeks.

Why did PSX rise even when rates were high?

Investors look ahead: expectations of future cuts, strong earnings or improving external accounts can lift shares before rates actually fall.

Do rate cuts always make shares go up?

No. If cuts come because the economy is weakening, or politics dominates, shares can fall despite lower rates.

What is KIBOR?

The Karachi Interbank Offered Rate, a benchmark that tracks the policy rate and is used to price many loans, including margin financing.
