Trading basics

How should a beginner in Pakistan start trading?

Last reviewed:

Short answer

Start with a regulated market — PSX shares through an SECP-licensed broker, or PMEX futures — rather than offshore apps. Learn the basics (how orders, charts and risk work), practise with small amounts or a simulator, risk no more than about 1% of your account per trade, and keep a journal. Ignore anyone promising fixed or fast profits; most beginners lose money in their first year.

Step 1: Decide what you want — investing or trading

Investing means buying good businesses or funds and holding them for years. Trading means trying to profit from price moves over days or hours. For most people with a job or studies, long-term investing in PSX shares or mutual funds is easier to sustain. If you still want to trade, start part-time with money you can afford to lose.

Step 2: Choose a legal, regulated market

Offshore forex, binary options and many prop firms are not regulated in Pakistan, and funding them can breach State Bank rules.

Step 3: Learn the essentials in order

  1. How orders work: market, limit and stop orders; bid, ask and spread.
  2. Reading charts: candlesticks, trend, support and resistance.
  3. One or two indicators at most, such as a moving average and RSI.
  4. Risk management: stop-loss placement and position sizing.
  5. Costs and taxes: commissions, CGT and dividend tax, filer status.

Step 4: Practise before risking real money

  • Paper trade your plan for at least a month and record every trade.
  • Then start with a small real account — real money changes how you feel and act.
  • Risk 1% or less per trade, and stop for the day after a set loss.
  • Review your journal weekly: which setups work, which emotions cause mistakes.

Step 5: Avoid the traps aimed at beginners

  • Signal groups and "professors" on WhatsApp and Telegram who sell tips or pump obscure shares.
  • Fixed monthly-return schemes labelled forex, crypto mining or AI trading.
  • Courses that promise you will "replace your salary in 90 days".
  • High leverage: 1:500 accounts wipe out beginners in days.
  • Trading with borrowed money, savings for family needs, or committee money.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need to start trading in Pakistan?

You can open a PSX account and buy shares with a few thousand rupees. More important than the amount is that it is money you can afford to lose while you learn.

Which is better for beginners, forex or stocks?

For Pakistanis, PSX stocks are usually the better start: they are regulated locally, need no leverage, and fewer scholars object to them than to leveraged forex.

Can I learn trading for free?

Yes. Exchange education material, free charting tools, regulator websites and practice accounts cover the basics. Be cautious with expensive courses that sell results instead of skills.

How long does it take to become profitable?

There is no fixed time, and many never do. Treat the first year as learning, keep risk small, and measure progress by discipline before profit.
