Can you really earn money from trading online in Pakistan?
Last reviewed:
Short answer
Some people do earn money from trading, but they are a small minority. Large studies of retail traders in Brazil, Taiwan, India and the US consistently find that most lose money after costs, especially day traders and users of leverage or options. Treat trading as a skill that takes years and capital to develop, not a quick source of income — and be suspicious of anyone selling it as "online earning".
What the data shows
Study
Finding
Brazil, index futures day traders (2013–2015 starters, 300+ days)
About 97% lost money; about 0.4% earned more than a bank teller's pay
India, SEBI study of F&O traders (FY22–FY24)
About 93% of individual traders lost money
EU regulators on retail CFD accounts
Most retail accounts lose money; brokers must disclose the share
US brokerage accounts (Barber & Odean)
The most active traders earned the lowest returns
Why most traders lose
Costs: spreads, commissions, swaps and taxes are certain; profits are not.
Leverage: small mistakes become large losses.
Competition: you trade against professionals with better data and lower costs.
Psychology: holding losers, cutting winners and revenge trading.
Undercapitalisation: trying to earn a salary from a small account forces excessive risk.
Realistic numbers
Professional fund managers who beat the market by a few percent a year are considered excellent. A trader who reliably makes 20–30% a year is exceptional. On a Rs 200,000 account, even 30% is Rs 60,000 a year — not a monthly salary. Anyone promising 10% a month or more is describing either extreme risk or a scam.
"Online earning" offers to avoid
Fixed daily or monthly profit plans, often called forex, crypto mining or AI trading.
Apps that pay you to recruit others.
Account managers who ask for your login and a profit share.
Binary option and "prediction" apps.
Paid signal groups showing only winning screenshots.
Better ways to grow savings
Long-term investing in diversified PSX shares or equity funds.
Islamic or conventional money-market funds for short-term savings.
Government savings schemes and, for overseas Pakistanis, Naya Pakistan Certificates.
Building a skill or business — usually a higher return than trading small sums.
If you still want to trade, do it with a small part of savings and strict risk limits.
Roman Urdu mein jawab
Kya trading se paise kamaye ja sakte hain?
Kuch log kamate hain, lekin woh bohat kam hain. Brazil, Taiwan, India aur US ki bari tehqeeqat ke mutabiq zyada tar retail traders cost ke baad nuqsan mein rehte hain — India mein F&O ke 93% traders. Trading ko jaldi kamai ka zariya nahi, saalon ki mehnat wali skill samjhein, aur 'online earning' ke naam par fixed munafa wale offers se door rahein.
Frequently asked questions
Can trading replace a job?
For very few people, after years of experience and with substantial capital. For most, it is better treated as a side activity with limited money.
How much can I earn from trading per month?
There is no reliable monthly income from trading; results vary and losing months are normal. Plans that promise a fixed monthly amount are a warning sign.
Is online trading income halal?
It depends on the activity: profits from Shariah-compliant shares are widely accepted, while leveraged forex, binary options and most futures are widely considered impermissible.
Do I need to pay tax on trading profits?
Yes. Capital gains on PSX shares are taxed through NCCPL, and forex or crypto profits are income for residents that must be declared.
