Trading basics

What is options trading and how do calls and puts work?

Last reviewed:

Short answer

An option is a contract that gives the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy (call) or sell (put) an asset at a fixed strike price before or on an expiry date. The buyer pays a premium for that right; the seller collects the premium and takes on the obligation. Options are a large market in the US and India, but listed options are not a mainstream product for retail investors in Pakistan.

Calls and puts

A worked example

A share trades at $100. You buy a call with a $105 strike expiring in one month for a $2 premium. If the share ends at $115, the option is worth $10 and your profit is $8 — four times your premium. If it ends below $105, the option expires worthless and you lose the $2. Most short-dated options bought by retail traders expire worthless or lose value as time passes.

What moves an option's price

  • Underlying price (delta): how much the option moves per unit move in the asset.
  • Time (theta): options lose value every day as expiry approaches.
  • Volatility (vega): expected swings raise premiums; they fall after big events such as earnings.
  • Interest rates (rho): a smaller effect, larger for long-dated options.

Options and Pakistani traders

  • PSX's derivatives market centres on futures; listed equity options are not a mainstream retail product in Pakistan.
  • Offshore brokers that sell US options or "digital options" to Pakistanis are not licensed here; the SECP has warned against unauthorised platforms offering options.
  • Binary or digital options apps are not real options markets — they are fixed-payout bets.
  • Most scholars consider conventional options impermissible because the premium is paid for a right alone, without ownership of an asset.

Why most beginners lose

Options combine leverage with time decay: you must be right about direction, size and timing. In India, SEBI found that about 93% of individual traders in equity futures and options lost money between FY22 and FY24, with aggregate losses above ₹1.8 lakh crore, and that more than three-quarters of loss-makers kept trading.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trade options on PSX?

PSX focuses on futures; listed options are not a mainstream retail product. Pakistanis seeking options usually use offshore brokers, which are not regulated in Pakistan.

What is the difference between options and futures?

A futures contract obliges both sides to trade at expiry. An option gives the buyer a right without obligation, for which the buyer pays a premium.

What does 0DTE mean?

Zero days to expiry — options that expire the same day. They move very fast and are among the riskiest products for beginners.

Are options halal?

Most contemporary scholars do not permit trading conventional options, because the premium is paid for a bare right.
